Poetry: petrichor

Of course, I should be on that drabble meme. Unfortunately my brain is in a very strange state, having engorged itself on three seasons of The X-Files. And I apologize. The next drabble should be up latest Saturday-- definitely before the twenty-fourth, anyway.

petrichor[1]
Scully, Wihin/Without arc (8x01/02)

It breathes familiarity, like the press of
metal against the back of your neck,
the sublimation of presence. Somewhere,
in the basement of his inhabitation, the
placenta of his existence, you will find
its withered origin. Uprooted. Letters on
a black plastic stand, half of them
missing. Begin the mourning of some-
thing you never knew you’d lost.

There are healed perforations in the
ceiling, remnants of ash behind the
filing cabinets, out of sight. In a drawer
somewhere there is a box of undeveloped
photographs. Imagine this space
in an impossible dimension of isometric
sketchings, a foreverland of his once-
existence. Force the tears down your oesophagus;
refrain from allowing a plethora of meaning-
less terms from slipping off your swollen
tongue.

[1] Petrichor (pronounced /ˈpɛtrɨkɚ/) (from Greek petros, "stone" + ichor) is the name of the scent of rain on dry earth.

Fic: Old Magic

Title: Old Magic
Author: [info]cherryfeather
Rating: PG for the mildest of sexual content
Spoilers: None; assumes established relationship (so, heh, must be AU)
Summary:The difference between a name and a real name is a profound one. Booth and Brennan have many names.

( In every old magic story ever told, learning the true name of a thing gives one power over it. )

restless sinner, restless sin

restless sinner, restless sin
a horror story. there will be death, there will be despair, there will be times of trial. all are guarantees in life, all we cry to see avoidable. I've never written a horror story before, but I did. and nothing is scarier than the great depression and uncertainty and murder. nothing is scarier than love. r

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

career

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 09, 2008 is:

career • \kuh-REER\  • verb
: to go at top speed especially in a headlong manner

Example sentence:
The nervous passengers gripped their seats and exchanged anxious looks as the bus careered down the icy road.

Did you know?
Chances are you're very familiar with the noun "career" meaning "a profession followed as a permanent occupation." What you may not know is that the word "career" got its start in the world of medieval tournaments. Jousting required knights to ride at full speed in short bursts, and 16th-century English speakers used the noun "career" (from Middle French "carriere") to refer to such gallops as well as to the courses knights rode. By the mid-17th century, the verb had acquired its general "go fast" meaning, and by the 19th century the noun had developed the workaday use that is common today. (In case you're wondering, "career" is not related to "careen," which also means "to move at high speed"; "careen" has nautical origins, tracing to the Latin word for "hull.")
